What is a high protein and high calorie diet?

  • A high protein and high calorie diet is made up of foods that are high in both protein and calories. You may need this diet if you are not getting enough calories and protein or if you have certain health conditions. Certain health conditions increase your body’s need for protein and calories. Some of these health conditions include cancer, HIV, and AIDS. Other conditions that increase calorie and protein needs include wounds (such as ulcers), trauma, burns, weight loss, and malnutrition. You may also need to follow this diet to gain weight and get stronger after a surgery or illness.
  • Some high protein and high calorie foods contain a large amount of fat. If you have been told by your caregiver to limit fat in your diet, ask your caregiver before following this diet plan.
